Prolonged periods of drought reduce the consumption of fresh milk and nutrients among young children aged 6 to 59 months and lactating mothers. The CSH conducts systematic nutritional assessment campaigns by measuring upper arm circumference and calculating the weight/height index in isolated camps.
The use of the MUAC tricolor ribbon allows the immediate detection of cases of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM). Diagnosed children are included in the emergency supplementation protocol based on paste enriched with peanuts, vitamins and minerals (Plumpy'Nut), combined with deworming with albendazole and iron supplementation.
CSH health educators train mothers in the preparation of infant flour enriched with dates, local cereals and vegetable oil, as well as in the rules of hygiene for preparing meals in the tent.
